It would be easy to walk right by El Siboney without ever giving it a second look, what with its plain red-brick facade that looks more like a post office than one of Key West’s true culinary gems. But one taste is all it takes to realize what all the fuss is about. Everything about this Cuban eatery is old-school, right down to the pictures on the menu. The whole fried fish and garlic chicken are favorites with restaurant regulars, but it’s hard to go wrong with much of anything on this menu, which includes such Cuban staples as ropa vieja and picadillo. It’s a great place for small groups, both for its easy-on-the-wallet prices and its pitchers of homemade sangria.

Glazed Donuts

A doughnut shop may not be the first place that pops into your head when you think of a city’s dining hotspots, but that only goes to show that you’ve never been to Glazed. What began in 2012 as a locals-only secret has morphed into a dining must for anyone visiting Key West. The secret? Husband-and-wife owners Megan and Jonathan Pidgeon take a traditional culinary approach to their creations, which is how you end up with a Key lime pie doughnut topped with torched meringue and other fresh fruit-filled delicacies like a peach blessed dossant and pineapple upside down brulée. Watch the sun set and embrace the slower-paced life as you dine on customer favorites like Caribbean lobster thermidor with cremini mushrooms, grouper Oscar with crabmeat and leek mashed potatoes, or the strip steak au poivre with a gorgonzola potato gratin. In addition to an impressive wine menu, the restaurant—keeping with its timeless style—offers a full menu of classic cocktails like the Hemingway daiquiri (which seems appropriate, given where you are).

Smoked BBQ on the Water

When you’re surrounded by water, it can be easy to gravitate toward a fresh helping of seafood at every meal. But the city has got some surprisingly great BBQ, too—and as the name suggests, it comes with a water view. The addictive “back country spring rolls” are a double-rolled and deep-fried mix of pork and collards served with sweet BBQ sauce and spicy mustard that will have your taste buds firing on all cylinders. While a pulled pork sandwich might sound like the most standard thing you can order, this one is anything but ordinary (it’s probably their signature rub, which they sell for you to take home, too). There’s a kid’s menu, which also makes it a great spot for the whole family. While it may put on a no-frills front with its red-and-white checked tablecloth-covered picnic tables, the food says otherwise.

Miami made the cut, too. But Key West, which was no. 6, really captured the imagination of Big 7 Travel, which considered such factors as beach amenities, natural scenery, community atmosphere, food and drink scene, and activities. “Many consider Key West to be the best beach area in the States,” Big 7 Travel writes. “And they aren’t wrong. Countless pastel colored homes, a robust vacation atmosphere, incredible seafood, and the most gorgeous beaches in Florida definitely back up the claim. Then, below the water, you’ve got incredible vibrant coral perfect for scuba diving and crystal clear waves perfect for wading the day away. It truly is paradise on earth.” Big 7 Travel also called the Overseas Highway one of the most scenic drives in the U.S.

The writers of the Best Coastal Cities report concede that Miami, no. 28 on the list, is not exactly a “cozy beach town” but couldn’t ignore its glitzy appeal: “This vibrant Floridian hub is loaded with culture and celebrates its diversity through food, art, and entertainment. From the luxury resort hotels and fine dining spots to the cozy hole in the walls and boutique inns, Miami is a little bit of everything. Allegiant announces new flights to Key West from CVG as low as $59

Arts Advocate and Patron Lynn Kaufelt Presented with 2021 Golden Mango Award

Three Cheers for Lynn Kaufelt!

We couldn’t be happier to announce Lynn Kaufelt as the receipient of this year’s Golden Mango award! Ever gracious, with the help of her son Jackson, Lynn accepted the award from her home as part of our Patron Brunch on January 6, held this year as a virtual event.

Her ongoing support of The Studios since even before it’s inception makes her tops in our book, but Lynn has also worked tirelessly to support Monroe County arts and service organizations over the years. She’s been involved with Key West Literary Seminar, KWAHS, Wesley House, Take Stock in Children and the Tennessee Williams Fine Art Center, among other organizations.

Presented annually to an outstanding leader who has benefitted Key West through significant contributions to the Arts, the winner receives a striking contemporary sculpture designed by artist Helen Harrison.

Celebrate the Key West Literary Pantheon

Books & Books @ The Studios of Key West honors Key West’s extraordinary literary legacy with the Key West Literary Pantheon, a frieze wrapping around the store above its bookshelves. The frieze celebrates the names of forty-four distinguished and nationally recognized authors, all of whom have lived and/or worked in our island paradise.

This amazing group includes eleven Pulitzer Prize winners (some multiple times), six National Book Award winners, and three winners of the prestigious Bollingen Poetry Prize. These literary artists have drawn sustenance from the Key West muse which in some subtle way drew out creativity in a manner that an intellectual hot-bed like New York could not.

As James Leo Herlihy, author of Midnight Cowboy put it “The town excited …. I spent all my time exploring, walking the streets. The place was mysterious, funky, indescribably exotic. It had much of the charm of a foreign country, but you had the post office and the A&P and the phone worked, so life was easy.” John Dewey, perhaps the leading philosopher of the last century, confirmed “the mañana mood develops very easily here,” but it made words flow. William Gaddis heard it was a lazy retreat popular with artists and writers. Looking for a quiet place to finish the novel he was working on, he found the perfect shady porch to set up his rickety Olympia typewriter, completing the novel J R, a winner of the National Book Award for Fiction.

Perhaps the best explanation comes from David Kaufelt, founder of the Key West Literary Seminar: “I have a theory why we all live here. It’s called the Peter Pan theory. Freud said that we are at our most creative when we are in our very early youth, before we’re five years old. That’s where we are here. We wear shorts, we ride bicycles, we have the water, a great symbol of the unconscious, and we’re free to be children here and let our spirits go. There’s nobody in suits and ties telling us what we have to do.”

Although our Pantheon is limited to deceased writers, there is no doubt that the Key West magic continues to this day. Among our current residents are many of equal stature: Pulitzer Prize
winners including Annie Dillard and Alison Lurie, National Book Award nominee Phyllis Rose, many members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters — including Anne Beattie, Joy Williams and Edmund White, the inestimable Laurent de Brunhoff, and Library of Congress Living Legend Judy Blume.
